Kyle's Birthday 2018

July 16, 2018 10:45 pm

My birthday happened to fall on Saturday this year which is always nice.  I "helped" Heather and Corinne assemble birdhouse kits in the morning.  Which is to say I built a birdhouse for Corinne and helped Heather build hers.

After lunch we went over the library where they were having engineering projects for kids.

Heather got to play with a hammer (turns out all you really need for "engineering" to entertain kids is hammers, nails, and blocks of wood), played with some large blocks, built a maze, and worked on a raft.

Corinne, on the other hand, tripped on the sidewalk as soon as we got there and badly skinned up her knees.  She spent the time there in pain and crying.  So we ended up leaving earlier than planned and going home to open presents.  They both enjoy helping unwrap gifts.

We went out to dinner at a local Mexican restaurant and then home again for cake.  We didn't have enough candles, so I had Jess use a binary format to describe my age.  What you can't see well in this pictures is the holes poked in the cake between the candles to represent the zeros in 100001.

And if you want to talk on the phone in our house this is how it's going to happen:

Heather's Dance Recital 2018

6:35 pm

Heather was losing interest in dance this year, but we got her to stick with it through the end of the year.  We had to travel 45 minutes to Chabot Community College for the recital, along with a mandatory dress rehearsal on Memorial Day that lasted hours past her bedtime (so unnecessary for 6-year olds).

Anyway.....

After getting my camera prepped, I left it at home.  As the recital was 45 minutes away (did I mention how that annoys me?) there wasn't any chance of going back for it.  So I had to rely on the pictures taken by the studio (which I do appreciate).

Okay, here's the only thing you may actually care about--a couple of pictures and a video:

"I have the absolute right to PARDON myself" - Donald Trump, June 4, 2018

Those are the words of a dictator--not something an elected leader of a democratic republic should ever speak.

When the President says something this insane, Congress should have a Constitutional Amendment ready by the afternoon to assert that, no, the President cannot pardon himself.

We should also include that a President cannot pardon persons being investigated, convicted, or sentenced for crimes that resulted in, would have resulted in, or attempted to create a personal benefit for the President involved.

Redwood Pergola

May 19, 2018 4:53 pm

When we had the house painted we cut down the wisteria. It was rotting in the center and insects were living in it so we figured it was only a matter of time until it died anyway.  Cutting it down would let us get it off the pergola so we could have it painted.

Once the wisteria was down it became clear that much of the pergola was rotten too.  Probably because it had not been regularly repainted as it had wisteria growing all over it.  So I took down the pergola as well.

Now that the house is painted and the weather has been nice I finally got around to rebuilding the pergola.  I chose to build it out of redwood so we could let it naturally weather and not have to deal with keeping it painted.  So now when the wisteria (hopefully) grows all over it the pergola won't rot out from under it.

It total it took me 3 days to build.  2 days for the 2x4 layer and I got the entire 2x2 layer done today.

The existing 2x6s are beveled on the ends so I matched the same angle on the redwood.  Since I don't own a miter saw or a table saw, I had to do all the work with a circular saw.  I think it came out pretty well considering I've never built anything like this before.
