Jess’ Birthday 2024

September 24, 2024 7:36 pm

When Jess returned home from dropping the girls off at school she found a mysterious, locked treasure chest on the table with a sealed envelope. Then she had to wait all day until I finished work to investigate. But in the meanwhile we went to lunch downtown at Maple Street Eatery.

At the appointed hour she opened the envelope and found a letter from a wandering soul asking for her help freeing a friend from a trap. She needed to find a lock and the key to unlock said lock. After telling the soul that she was ready to help the soul communicated to her the location of a map and riddle by flashing the lights in Morse code.

Finding the map she followed a series of riddles with each one leading to a “sigil” and the next riddle. With all the sigils she used information from the original letter to arrange the sigils on the map to point her at the location of the key. With the key was a “magic” flashlight which when shone on the map revealed the location of the lock.

Unlocking the lock released the trapped spirit friend who then flitted across the house leading her into the living room where it made the lamp change colors which matched the numbered and colored sigils to reveal the combination to the treasure chest.

I had a little fun with the home automation stuff this time. I designed and 3d-printed the key (with hidden magnet) and the lock (not a real lock, but it did have a magnetic contact sensor hidden inside) which I’m pretty pleased with.

She opened the chest and received her presents which included tickets to an American Authors concert next month (You can’t get fun tickets these days, so I made my own).

I took the girls shopping a few weeks ago. We went to the outlet mall and I asked them to think of things that Mom would like and gave them a budget to work in. Heather selected a box of fancy chocolates. Corinne selected a necklace and earrings from Claire’s (given that she was extremely excited about this selection and that she met the criteria I couldn’t in good conscience discourage her from the idea).

Then it was off to Melo’s for dinner (they have a potato-bacon pizza which Jess likes). And back home for caramel cheesecake.

Jess’ Birthday 2023

Jess’ Birthday fell on a weekday this year which means waiting until school and work are done to celebrate.

But before she could do that she needed to find a few of her presents. She made short work of my riddles and we got to opening presents and then heading out to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory (which had incredibly slow service that evening). After dinner we came back home for the triple-layer caramel cheesecake I made (blondie crust, caramel cheesecake, with salted-caramel topping). I think I’ve just about got it perfected.

Aside from the wildfire smoke that has settled in during this week it seemed to be a pretty good day.

Jess’ Birthday 2022

Jess got to enjoy her first birthday adventure this year. Trying to squeeze an adventure in to the evening while still leaving time to have dinner and eat cake is tough but we got it done.

The adventure started by reading a slightly modified version of “Let’s go for a Drive” by Mo Willems:

Elephant and Piggy collected Jess, the family, and a cake. But when Piggy went to get the presents they had gone missing! Jess had to find Sherlock Holmes to investigate.

She found Sherlock lounging on the book shelf next to Hercule Poirot. Sherlock was called away on urgent business but directed Jess to a person of interest, but she’d need to collect a few clues to identify the right one from the lineup (of characters from Dinosaur Tea Party).

She visited the friendly moose (a carving we bought in Canada), the glowing jellyfish (a glass sculpture we got at an aquarium that glows in the dark), the grey dragon (a figurine on a shelf in our room), she who fell through the looking glass (Alice as found in “Through the Looking Glass”), and he whose house has legs (“Howl’s Moving Castle”). Using the clues they provided she was able to identify the person of interest, Lloyd, and question him regarding his knowledge of the missing presents (by using the identifying features on his character sheet to determine the code for a lock on a mini chest).

Lloyd admitted to being present at the time, but swore he was only trying to get a taste of the cake in the fridge. He tried to follow the suspect but couldn’t keep up. However, he ran across “a frog that fancies himself a prince” who might know more.

In the frog’s mouth was a cryptex dropped by the suspect. The frog said he didn’t know what it is, but she should visit Madame Roo, a psychic, who could probably help.

Corinne helped by presenting the cryptex to Madame Roo while Jess read the clue. Madame Roo was able to divine an image out of the mind of the suspect, but it was confused and difficult to make sense of. Jess would need to piece it together to find the password to open the cryptex (by completing a small puzzle with an “I Spy” style image of a jumble of stuff from Corinne’s room. In the image were Scrabble tiles which could be used to spell “FAIRY”).

Inside the cryptex was a secret message sent from one of Heather’s stuffed animals to one of Corinne’s stuffed animals instructing them to wait until the coast was clear and grab the purloined presents from under the chair in the living room.

So the presents had been found and could now be opened.

The girls picked out novelty socks from a store at the mall. Cats in boxes and a tuxedo cat running for president:

She also unwrapped an invitation to tea for two at a tea house in the next town over. And after tea, a special showing of “Howl’s Moving Castle” at the theater (which very conveniently lined up with her birthday, I found out about it and bought tickets months ago)

Then it was off to dinner at First Street Ale House before returning home for cake. I made my signature caramel-cheesecake on a blondie crust with a layer of salted caramel on top.

And by then it was past the girls’ bedtime and the day was over.

Jess’ Birthday 2021

September 25, 2021 10:34 am

Monday was Jess’ birthday which started with getting the girls off to school and me to work (in my closet). She went to lunch with a friend and the girls had homework and swim class in the afternoon. I dropped the girls off at home after swim class and drove out to Melo’s to pick up dinner while Jess got the girls cleaned (and heated up chicken nuggets for Corinne). Potato/bacon pizza for Jess, pepperoni/chicken calzone for me, and cheese pizza for Heather.

After dinner was cake and presents!

So far I haven’t had a great track record in picking birthday cakes that Jess loves, but this year we seem to have a winner. I spent the weekend attempting a new cake cobbled together from a couple of other recipes: A salted-caramel cheesecake with blondie crust and salted-caramel topping.

It ended up a little undercooked–the center wasn’t fully set, but it was still delicious.

And presents!

Jess’ Birthday 2020

September 26, 2020 10:47 am

Jess wanted to go to the beach for her birthday. So we packed into the van with our social-bubble buddies and headed out to Half Moon Bay. We pre-ordered some sandwiches from Subway and ate lunch next to the ocean.

The girls had a blast playing in the water and people were generally pretty good about distancing and mask wearing. The parking lot was full, but it didn’t feel really crowded. Maybe that’s because it was foggy and you couldn’t see very far down the length of the beach.

Corinne eventually got cold and fell asleep hunched over on the sand.

Then she decided that on me was the only acceptable place to rest.

Once we’d had our fill of the beach we went to get gelato. This was a tactical mistake. The gelato shop was up the road away from the route home. And the way back was bumper-to-bumper traffic of people trying to head home from the coast.

So a short gelato trip added over an hour of additional drive time to get home (which is only about 1 hour anyway). But we eventually got home at which point it was dinner time. We had to parallelize our remaining celebrations in order to get things done in time for the girls’ bedtime. Jess got the girls bathed while I heated up some chicken strips for them to eat. Then Jess blew out candles (all 40 of them!) on the cake I made and opened presents. By that time our dinner order was ready so I went to pick that up while Jess got the girls in bed.

Jess decided that my birthday cake is so good that she should have it for her birthday too. So that’s the cake I made–chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, complete with Kyle’s special, vanilla-cream filling.

And that’s 3 of 4 family birthdays this year celebrated under the ongoing stay-at-home order and it looks like Heather’s will be the same.
