On May 9 the orchestra competed in “Music in the Parks,” received a “Superior” rating, 1st place in their division, 2nd place overall, and the esprit de corps award. On the same night (May 21) as Corinne’s choir concert was their Spring concert. So as soon as Corinne’s performance was over we booked it over to Junction to watch Heather. They played a “Bella Ciao” (combined with the choir), “Allegro” (from Handel’s Concerto Grosso Op. 6, No. 1), “Silver Skies Breaking,” “Legends of Glory,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” medley, and “Viking” (combined with beginning orchestra).

Corinne 5th-grade Choir Concert
The choir director decided to arrange a special concert on May 21 for the schools at which she teaches choir specifically to invite the mayor to attend. I don’t know–I guess it was to get the kids excited about their first concert? It worked for Corinne, she was stoked.
Her school sang a song (“Moon”), then another school sang a song, then they combined for another song (“This is Me”).

Heather’s Winter Concert 2024
Heather is in advanced orchestra this year by virtue of this being her second year in orchestra on the cello. Of the six cellos she placed as third chair.
At their winter concert they played several songs. First, “Prelude to Te Deum.” Then two Halloween songs: “Creatures” and “This is Halloween” (from The Nightmare before Christmas). They followed that up with “Le Froid de l’Hiver” (“The Cold of Winter”). And after a number from a newly created “Chamber Orchestra” comprised of the top players of each section (not included in the video), the full orchestra finished their performance with “Forever Joyful!”

Heather’s Winter Concert 2023
Heather switched to cello this year (in 5th grade violin was the only string option). So that means many of the kids in the orchestra, like Heather, have only been playing their instrument for about 3 months.
The school has a “beginner orchestra” and an “advanced orchestra.” From what I can tell kids are in the beginner orchestra the first year they take the class at the school, rather than based on years playing their instrument. Otherwise any kid that took violin in 5th grade and continued with it would skip beginner orchestra and I don’t think that’s how it works.
The beginner orchestra played 2 songs, “Can Can” and “Shadow Dance.” Here’s their full performance.
