Sanctuary Anniversary-moon

June 30, 2010 4:59 pm

To celebrate our anniversary, Kyle and I decided to go away for the weekend. Based pretty much entirely on how much I loved the beach at Point Reyes, I found us a place at the beach! (Having grown up in the Midwest, I’m basically a stranger to beaches. Kyle thinks this is bizarre.) In any case, Kyle took a half-day off on Friday and we headed for Marina, out on Monterey Bay.

Now, we knew that it was going to be chilly. The weather forecast for the weekend was the low sixties, if I remember correctly. The weather lied. When we got there, it was about 50 degrees, cloudy, and windy. Fortunately, the locals are equipped for this sort of “summertime” weather. The forecast would continue to be wrong, but we dealt with it. And it did warm up on Saturday and Sunday.

So the thing to know about the place we were staying (it’s called the Sanctuary Beach Resort) is that it’s built on a nature preserve and there are various measures in place to help the environment out a bit. First up: golf carts! The resort consists of several separate bungalow-style buildings, rather than one big one. Instead of everybody driving their cars around the site, everybody gets a golf cart. Yes, we both had a lot of fun driving ours.

IMGP2852atinyOkay, so we got to our room. And it was seriously one of the very best ones they had, way out on the end with absolutely nothing between us and the ocean. Don’t believe me? This was our view:3

Oooooh. I’m seriously thinking of making that my wallpaper. It re-relaxes me just to look at it. The fence is ‘cuz we weren’t allowed out on the dunes (protected habitat)–the beach access was down a bit further. The extra benefit of the little banned area, though, is that nobody could go walking past. So we could sit in front of our patio window (too cold to sit outside!) and look out to sea and feel like there was just no-one else around. It was glorious. (Side note: who knew dunes were so colorful? Not me. But the plants were gorgeous.)

24Note the fireplace. That’s how our room was heated. How cute is that? Our own little fire demon to keep us warm (yes, it was gas and ran off a thermostat). Calcifer even dried my jeans after the ocean gods got them wet. Good little fire demon. If you looked right out to the right, though, you could sorta see what the little buildings looked like:1

And this shot, taken Sunday, further illustrates how close we really were to the ocean:IMGP2659btinySadly, it was way too cold to go down to the beach Friday night. We settled into our room and went to dinner at a local Italian/seafood joint. On the way back, we stopped at Starbuck’s for some hot chocolate, then just relaxed in our room, reading and trying to balance our desire to have the door open so we could hear the waves against our desire to not freeze. There was a break in the clouds such that we could actually watch the sun set. I had actually never done this before and didn’t realize you could truly see it move! I may have also spent a bit too much time staring at the sun itself, but my eyes eventually recovered.

We started Saturday by going to Denny’s for “breakfast” at noon. Afterward, we went to a pond we’d spotted to play with the bajillion birds. There were gulls, ducks, pigeons, and geese, all being crazy.IMGP2638_smallAlso, on a related note, I love this sign:IMGP2538atiny

The third duck is my favorite.

Next, it was time to finally hit the beach! I’d been looking forward to dabbling my toesies in the water for weeks and weeks. Sadly, it was still dang cold and the wind was blowing really hard. So despite the fact that we took blankets and books down with us, we only stayed for around half an hour. I don’t think Kyle ever sat down; he just stood around, wrapped in the blankets. I rolled my jeans up and ran in and out of the surf like a loon, but it was super cold and the wind was giving me a headache (and Kyle a jaw-ache), so we headed back to our room and on to the hot tub to warm up.

After the hot tub, we were both ‘zausted. Kyle took a nap and I, who am not a fan of naps, computered for a bit. I woke him up when I got bored and we spent forever trying to decide what to do for dinner. We ended up going into Monterey for P.F. Chang’s, which was tasty. That was pretty much it. We were both really tired from the hot tub (we’ve decided those things are energy-sappers), so we turned in early. After enjoying the chocolates provided with our turn-down service, of course. (Somehow, we never did get around to that complimentary bottle of wine. Pity.)

Sunday was our last day there, and we had to be out by noon. I knew I wanted to go back down to the beach, so I woke Kyle up early, around 8, and we ran down first thing. This was good, because it was actually warm and sunny for the first time since we got there! (“Warm” is a relative term, of course, but still.) Kyle took a couple hundred pictures, a few of me being fascinated by waves.

Okay, I look like a moron there because I was just attacked by a wave monster. You can’t tell from just one shot, but I was wading along happily, and then a couple of waves came together to make one BIG one, I got rather shockingly wet (that water was cold!), and then came pelting my ridiculous way back up the beach. And Kyle caught it all on camera and insisted it go on the blog. So there you go.c

After a while, Kyle retreated to an “impenetrable fortress”:IMGP2839atiny

Yeah. It was soon flooded.

All too soon, we had to return to our room to pack up and get ready to go. I did not want to leave our exceedingly peaceful oasis. However, the appearance of this guy made it a bit easier:IMGP2848atinyKyle found him on the bed (we think he hitched a ride via his computer bag). All I know is that I was in the bathroom, putting on my makeup, when I heard screaming. Yelping, at least. And yes, we trapped it under a glass and left it for housekeeping. But we figured that’s what they would have wanted us to do–they had a sign in the room about different wildlife from the dunes that could possibly make its way into our room and offering to “escort it out for us” if we called them. True, they didn’t mention spiders. But still.

Okay, this post is almost done, I promise. We checked out of the hotel around 11:30 and went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I’ll be brief and just say that my favorite parts were the jellyfish and sea horse exhibits. (They were so cool!)tiny tiny2

For scale’s sake, that first jellyfish was small. The second one was huge. Sorry, no pics of the sea horses. Kyle’s favorites were the penguins (no surprise there) and sea otters. The aquarium’s parking garage is down Cannery Row, so we got to walk along all the shops, and we had to stop in the Ghirardelli store and split a sundae. We also picked up a yummy caramel apple at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Co. before going to dinner at California Pizza Kitchen. And after yet another tasty meal, we pointed Chloe back towards Livermore. Vacation over.

Happy Birthday to Me

June 12, 2010 9:56 pm

Wednesday was my birthday. It started out with an exciting day at work where I fixed bugs and watched Google lectures on Map Reduce.

I get to come home for lunch which is nice and when I came in the door I discovered Jess had decorated for me!IMGP2471

After work I went and used the gift certificate Jess gave me at Christmas for a massage. My shoulders and lower-back had been rather tweaked so getting those knots worked out was rather nice.

Then I went home and waited around for Jess to get home from cub scouts so we could go to dinner. We went to Black Angus steakhouse in Dublin which was pretty good. They sang a birthday song and brought a giant cookie-ma-jig which was very tasty.

Jess made me a lovely chocolate with chocolate frosting cake:IMGP2472After dinner I blew out candles, but we were both too full to eat any cake.

IMGP2477Jess ordered me a really nice frame to put my diplomas in. They’ve just been sitting in a box ever since I got them and I’ve been wanting to do something with them. So we put them in the frame and I took it to work and put it in my office which is nice. It’s almost like I’m a professional!

IMGP2497Thanks for all the birthday wishes and gifts. One year ago was a very different time. I was still in Provo, unmarried, still in grad school. Quite a change in my life from 24 to 25. It’s been a great year, here’s to another for 25 to 26.

Our day off

May 31, 2010 10:02 pm

Today we finally got around to renting a Rug Doctor and getting the carpets cleaned. Overall they hadn’t been too bad, but there were some spots near the kitchen. Several months ago I knocked the syrup bottle off the counter (or dropped it or something). Plastic bottle, no problem–except when it lands on the brittle plastic lid, which explodes sending syrup all over and then allowing syrup to pour forth all over the floor. Luckily most of it was on the tile, but some of the splashes from the explosion got on the carpet. We cleaned it up as best we could, but over time the spots held on to more and more dirt and grime.

So we finally got that all cleaned up. After moving the furniture off of the carpeting (as much as possible) and vacuuming it only took about an hour to do the actual carpet cleaning.

So then we got to leave and let the carpet dry as much as possible. So we went and got lunch and then went to the park. But the sun decided to go hide behind some clouds and with the wind it wasn’t very warm. So we went and watched Iron Man 2, which was about what you would expect from a summer action movie. It wouldn’t have been quite so ridiculous if they didn’t have two gaping problems: 1. When Ivan is wielding his light-saber-whips (for lack of a better term) why doesn’t anyone just shoot him? He’s not wearing any armor! Instead he gets to destroy things for awhile until Tony finally puts him down. Then cops show up with their guns and arrest the guy. 2. Tony’s multiple suits are designed for his body, which means they’ve been designed to use his implanted-into-chest power source. However, Roadie (however you spell it) is able to just hop into one of the suits without a problem.

Anyway, it was about what you’d expect from a summer action movie. Not as good as the first one though.

After the movie we came home to check on the carpet which was drying satisfactorily. So we lounged about for a bit and then went and got dinner. After dinner it was time to put the apartment back together. And here we are. An exciting day overall.

It’s really nice to have the carpets clean again.

A day off…. sort of

April 5, 2010 2:48 pm

For whatever reason, today is a Lab holiday. So, what did I get to spend the day doing on my day off? Waiting around at the DMV of course. Trying to finally get the title change done for my car I went and waited for 2 hours. 2 hours so that I could hand the form to a person who looked at it, printed out something, stapled it together and said, “Your new title will be mailed to you.” Awesome. Well, at least they didn’t tell me I had to get some other random form signed.

I did manage to get some additional problems taken care of during that time though. Remember how I thought I had actually won when I called AT&T to complain about raising the price of our DSL? and then ended up with phone service which magically would lower our overall monthly bill? Well apparently the CSR I spoke to was ‘mistaken’ when she told me there was no activation fees. We got our first new bill last week which had an awesome $40 activation fee. Also, got a bill for our previous account which said “Final Bill”, but wasn’t pro-rating the DSL price for the partial month. So, based on the bills I had in hand, we were getting double-charged for the DSL service for 2 weeks.

So I called the customer support number listed on my bill. After waiting on hold the person I talked to asked me what state I was in and then said she’d have to transfer me to some other department that has access to California accounts. [Really? well, why don’t you list this magic other office on my California bill?]

Then I get to wait on hold for another 10 minutes. This person answers and says she’ll have to transfer me to the department that handles California Billing. [COME ON!]

Then I get to wait on hold again! So when Brandon picks up I ask what number this office is so I can avoid getting transferred in the future. He says he’s just at the regular nationwide customer service center at the number I originally called and has no idea why I was transferred twice. [Holy Crap AT&T! Get your act together!]

Brandon tells me that the CSR who made my accounts changes shouldn’t have told me there’d be no activation fee, but agrees to reverse the charge. He then tells me that the other bill I received that said “Final Bill” was really an “Initial Final Bill” and that I’d received a “Final Final Bill” with the pro-rated charge on it. And that even though the bill says my automatic payment will be debited on April 12, that it actually won’t. So we’ll see how that goes.

Then I got to call our insurance agent to change the policy to reflect the new title information. But Amica is quite good and I didn’t wait on hold and our agent had it taken care of very quickly.

So that’s been my day.

Jess got to go to U.S. Bank to try and determine why she keeps getting charged monthly fees for a free checking account. However, neither the people here nor the people at the branch that ‘owns’ her account in Utah had ever seen these charges or knew why she was getting them. So, how do you solve such a problem? Close the account and open a new one at the branch here in CA! Which will supposedly solve the problem.

Wooo. Fun times all around.

Wait. You mean… I… I won?

March 15, 2010 10:08 pm

Lacking any other choices than evil Comcast and slightly-less-evil AT&T for Internet service at our apartment we signed up with AT&T. Having cell phones with more minutes than we can possibly use we had no interest in getting land-line phone service. When you look at prices online the DSL prices AT&T offers are cheaper if you bundle it with phone service, but the overall price is always higher. So, when we moved in we signed up for just Internet service.

Our most recent bill has some fine print labeled “Important Information” that informs us that beginning this month our bill would be increasing by $3 a month. I was annoyed with this and called to complain, see if they would leave it at our existing rate, and if necessary downgrade our service to a lower price point (we’re already paying ridiculous amounts for the service we get when compared with the fiber service I had in Utah which was both cheaper and incredibly faster). So it was the principle of the thing.

After fighting my way through their obnoxious voice-only prompts (I would much rather push buttons than try to “explain in a few words why [I’m] calling today”), and waiting on hold for 10 minutes, I got a live person who had no idea what I was talking about. They had never heard of this price increase and apparently couldn’t see anything about my account that says it was happening. So he conferred with someone else who had no idea what I was talking about. Then they discovered that I had originally ordered my service through the AT&T website, which is apparently an entirely different department. So he tried to transfer me to someone else, and I was greeted with, “We’re sorry, this number is not in service…” Awesome AT&T, way to transfer me to a non-existent phone number.

So I called back (voice prompts, + 10 minutes on hold) and got someone else. Who also had no idea what I was talking about at first, but pulled up by bill and read the text. Then she suddenly knew what I was talking about, but said she didn’t think it applied to my account. So she put me on hold. After a few minutes she came back and said she could offer me the same DSL service plus local phone service for $5 cheaper than our current monthly amount! The magic of AT&T’s system. I asked, if this was the case, why did they bother selling DSL without phone service? Her answer was to claim that some people just really didn’t want phone service. This is despite the fact that I can’t find any such deal like this on the website, but I’m not going to mention that to her.

So, she gives me the exact price quote. To be absolutely clear on the matter, I ask directly, “Is this an introductory offer?” – “No.” “Is there an activation fee?” – “No.” “Will I have the same DSL speeds I have now, 6.0 Mbps down, 768 Kbps up? – “Yes.”

Ok, well, why wouldn’t I do this? We might not even bother hooking up a phone. But somehow we can get the same DSL service plus local phone service for cheaper than the DSL service alone. And there’s still no contract.

As odd as the notion seems to me, I’m pretty sure I actually won that phone call. We’ll see if it actually pans out the way it was sold to me. But if there’s any trouble I made sure to get the CSR’s name, so I’ll know who to blame.

[Update]

No, of course I didn’t win.  The answers I was given were outright lies.  There was an activation fee that I had to call and get reversed.  And it was an introductory offer and after 6 months my bill went through the roof.  Filthy lying useless company.
