Christmas Crafting

December 6, 2014 8:52 pm

First things first, I had to make a countdown chain like we had last year. I fancied up the posterboard it’ll get mounted on a little bit, though.

P1010341asThis is what it looks like a few days in:

P1010360asNext, I saw this idea on Pinterest and thought Heather might really like it: a felt Christmas tree with felt ornaments she can decorate and play with all she wants. I freehanded my own tree, but used the templates here for the ornaments and star. I can’t sew, but I can cut and glue, so it seemed like a good project for me. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out, and Heather got super excited when I explained that it was her tree for her to play with however she likes.P1010344asLastly (though actually, it was started first), I crocheted a garland. Once again, I found the patterns online (stars, trees, and snowflakes) and went from there.P1010348as P1010351asAnd as a final bonus, I also just ordered a couple of canvases. The first is a page from a coloring book that I colored. I think I’ll put it in the nursery.

Secret Garden 1sThe text on this second canvas is the chorus from a song our Primary learned this last year. The chorus has always moved me in particular, so I put this together (with a lot of help from Kyle) and had it printed up. the family is of Gods

The beginnings of a very long trip…

July 7, 2014 8:21 pm

We just returned from a month-long stay in Texas. Kyle was doing a program at A&M for work (I’ll let him explain that at some point if he wants to) and that’s only 3.5 hours from where my parents live, in Frisco. So Heather and I stayed with them, and Kyle came up on the weekends.

The drive out to Texas was largely uneventful: we just needed to get out there as quickly as possible. We left May 28th (a Wednesday) and arrived on the 31st (Saturday). Kyle’s classes started on Monday, the 2nd and ran through the 26th of June.

We did make an impromptu stop at a dinosaur museum that happened to be around when we needed a break from driving, though. It was in Tucumcari, NM, and it kind of rocked! It wasn’t large, but they had some cool stuff. And Heather got to dig for fossils! Okay, they were cow bones buried in pieces of walnut shell. But it was awesome, and she loved it. We also discovered that if you can read, you’re going to seem like a genius to anyone who can’t (like a 2-year-old). No wonder we all thought our parents knew everything! Turns out, they were just reading the informational signs.

April & May—Blankets, blankets, and more blankets!

I leave you with two videos.

Disneyland 2014

1:22 pm

Megan and Mollie came down to Disneyland for a band trip, so we decided to go, too! We went for two days, Friday and Saturday, and we had a wonderful time. I’m so glad we went! It’s been a while now, though (it was the beginning of April), so I don’t remember most of the details. This blog will be mostly pictures. But here are a few things I do remember:

1. Heather gets carsick. Yech. Movies on the tablet, which is strapped to the headrest in front of her = okay. Books/toys/anything in her lap = NOT okay.

2. We drove down to Santa Monica Pier on the way. I’d never been to a pier before, and it was a lot of fun. Heather and I both loved the beach. It’s so fun to wade in the waves!

3. Just a week or two before this, Heather started being genuinely afraid of things. (I can’t describe how this is different than things that used to scare her, but it is. Very. Normal toddler development is weird sometimes.) Our first ride was the Monsters, Inc. ride. It’s one of the basic dark rides: you get in a car and ride around in a dark area and see scenes/characters from the movie. The sights are very bright and very loud, and Heather screamed her head off. She was completely traumatized. (Last year, she was fine with these types of rides. We rode a million of ’em.) We tried to do a couple of less scary rides, out in the open air, but she was still too freaked out. So we went to the Baby Care station (love those!) while we waited for Megan and Mollie to arrive. We looked at books and just chilled in the quiet space, and Heather was okay after that. No more dark rides, though!

And now, pictures! Heather called these the Swappy Swings, since we did a Rider Swap to allow us to ride, too, after Mollie and Megan, without waiting in line again. I love swings!

IMGP1818asThe ferris wheel was one of Heather’s favorite rides. (The stationary cars, not the swinging ones. I don’t think that would have been a good idea.)

IMGP1821asCarousels were also a big hit. We rode them many times.

IMGP1830asIMGP1839asIMGP1844asIMGP1848asWe didn’t think it’d be worthwhile to wait in line to see characters, but there were some rabbit characters in the same area as where Megan’s band was playing. Since she loves Winnie the Pooh so much, we thought Heather’d get a kick out of meeting Rabbit.

IMGP1856asIMGP1869asIMGP1874asIMGP1893asIMGP1908asIMGP1909asIMGP1918asIMGP1926asIMGP1945asYou may have noticed a lot of binkie in these pictures. Even without the dark rides, Heather found the whole experience rather overwhelming (no surprise there). Sucking on her binkie helped her cope with it all, so she had it the whole time we were in the parks. As long as she did, she was in a great mood and had a blast!

IMGP1961asP1000670asOne of the highlights was the Autopia ride. The cars are on a track, so Heather got to steer! There’s still quite a bit of play, and her driving made for a very jolty ride. But she thought it was the greatest thing ever.

Heather really enjoys when we babysit Liam on Fridays. They’re becoming good friends.

She picked a flower of our bush outside (nightshade–yes, very poisonous) and insisted on keeping it. Then she tore the sticker off the watermelon in three pieces and decorated herself with them. ‘Cuz that makes sense.
