Jess' car has a terminal case of busted transmission. The cost of replacing the transmission is more than the car would be worth once installed. So we're probably not going to do that. It's kind of too bad since her car only has ~50k miles; but it is 14 years old.
So we're trying to decide what to do. We had been hoping her car would last until we figure we'll need a minivan, but it's a bit too soon for that, so a minivan at this point would just be a waste of gas. So we're trying to decide if we should go with 1 car for awhile and/or try to buy something used to get a few more years down the road (so to speak).
Minivan! Minivan! Minivan!
(Sorry. I had to.)
I'd go used since Jess doesn't drive all that much. Your Honda should be reliable for several more years and you can get your van when it is starting to show its age. We're trying to figure out what to buy for our next car since our "newest" cars are 11 years old and well over 100,000 miles. They still run fine but we wouldn't head out cross country in them. I like having a van so we can drive people around when they come to visit but for the other 50 weeks a year we'd just be wasting gas. Dad wants 4WD which also uses more gas than necessary when you don't need the extra traction. Right now we're investigating Subaru Outbacks which would mean any time anyone with more than one child visited we'd have to take two cars to go anywhere. There doesn't seem to be a perfect solution.
